Hybrid Fire Extinguishing Technology and NFPA 770

Presented by: Aaron VanDyke & Brendan Bryant, Victaulic

Hybrid fire extinguishing technology combines nitrogen and fine water droplets to create a highly effective fire suppression solution that addresses the limitations of traditional systems such as sprinklers, water mist, and clean agents. By simultaneously cooling the fire and reducing oxygen levels, hybrid technology offers a low-pressure, environmentally neutral approach that minimizes water damage, eliminates chemical byproducts, and reduces room integrity requirements. Since its early development in the mid-2000s, the technology has been validated through extensive fire testing across a wide range of applications including turbines, data centers, industrial machinery, wet benches, and high-altitude environments, earning key approvals and listings along the way.

NFPA 770, the Standard on Hybrid (Water and Inert Gas) Fire Extinguishing Systems, serves as the primary code governing the design, installation, acceptance, inspection, testing, and maintenance of hybrid systems. Its development reflects the growing recognition of hybrid technology as a mainstream, highperformance suppression solution rather than an alternative to traditional methods. Understanding NFPA 770 and how it relates to the broader standards ecosystem is essential for engineers, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction looking to specify and deploy hybrid systems with confidence.
