Join us on October 5th for a presentation by Wes Baker of FM Global. Wes will be discussing new in-rack sprinkler (IRAS) guidelines developed by FM Global.  In 2015 FM Global released new IRAS protection options in Data Sheet 8-9, Storage of Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and Plastic Commodities, that allow for increased vertical distances between IRAS and increased storage heights above the top level of in-rack sprinklers.

This new guidance is based on research that utilized a coupled experimental and modeling strategy. Intermediate-scale cold-flow water distribution and fire suppression tests were coupled with a newly developed computational fluid dynamics model. This strategy revealed fundamental phenomena and was used to optimize large-scale IRAS fire testing. Combined experimental and modeled results were used to provide the new IRAS protection guidance.

Wes Baker is a Sr. Engineering Technical Specialist in the Engineering Standards division at FM Global. He is a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and an NFPA member serving on both the NFPA 13 Installation and NFPA 13 Discharge committees. Wes has been with FM Global for 30 years and is currently responsible for data sheets related to the protection of storage as well as the installation guidelines for sprinklers that are used for storage protection.
