As the 2nd Vice President of the New England Chapter of the SFPE I am responsible for managing the chapters membership. Many of our members are not aware that we have a few grade levels of membership available, so I wanted to take this oportunity to outline those different grades.
Chapter Member – Can attend monthly dinners at a discounted rate, attend a tour of a local facility, participate in the annual seminar, network with other professionals in fire protection engineering, and most of all stay up to date with your peers on technologies and practices in Fire Protection Engineering. As a supporting member you are also assisting in the development of the scholarships awarded to New England students. Membership is available to anyone and requires an annual service fee of $40.
Chapter Member with Fast Pass - have the same benefits as regular members, but pre-pay for all of the monthly dinner meetings at the renewal stage, which can simplify expense reports. The Fast Pass Membership includes a discounted rate for meetings and is available for any member. Pre-payment of dinner meetings cannot be transferred to any other member and Fast Pass Members must still pre-register for meetings.
Student Member- may attend dinners on various fire protection topics and attend the yearly tour for free. As students, you will be able to introduce yourself to local professionals, and learn about new topics in fire protection engineering. Any current student is eligible for student membership. No annual service fee is required, however, the member must provide proof of enrolment on an annual basis.
Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) Members – can attend monthly dinners and other Association events at a specially discounted rate. As an AHJ, you will be able to stay up to date with technologies and practices in Fire Protection Engineering and network with fire protection professionals and AHJs from other government agencies. AHJ from any government agency is eligible for AHJ membership. AHJ members must still pre-register for meetings and are required to pay the annual service fee of $40.
Life Members – Any member who is over the age of 60 years and has been a member for at least 5 years can pay the amount equal to three times the annual service fee ($40x3=$120) and be considered a lifetime member without the need to pay a service fee every year or to renew their membership. Any member meeting the criteria can send a request to the board for consideration as a life member.
Honorary Members – A member over the age of 60 years that has been a member for at least 15 years and has rendered exceptional service to the chapter and has made a substantial contribution to the profession of fire protection engineering. This grade of membership waves annual service fee and is awarded to any member after a majority vote by the Board as well as the membership present at any chapter meeting.
If you have any questions about your membership, feel free to reach out to me.
